Kairos Staff 1996-2024

Karios People: A Chronology

For the first twelve years, Kairos maintained an issue-specific masthead; when we moved to our third journal design with issue 13.1 (2009), the infrastructure changes meant that we only provided the most current staff listing. We also provided a listing of editorial board members for the first time in issue 12.1 (2008). In issue 12.2, we can also see a significant staff increase, with a plethora of assistant editors (often assigned by section) and the shift from an in-house 'news' section to the independent-but-related KairosNews project. We also see individuals moving from assistant editor positions to section editor positions (or to associate editor and then to section editor, after we added the associate editor category in 2015).

For the first decade, there was a lot of staff turnover, often from issue to issue. From this list, we can also see the journal wrestling with position titles: for instance, there is a shift from "production manager" to "interface editor" (whose sole responsibility in each case was design and maintenance of the HTML for the journal) and then introducing a new role under the prior position of "production manager" in issue 3.2. In reviewing these staff lists, we also see that we have an unacknowledged server administrator who was a key supporter of the journal but not listed on the masthead (Joseph Unger while the journal was at TTU; Doug took over those duties when it moved to MSU and then after we shifted to running our own servers). Some of our early mastheads list copyeditors, but some do not (it appears that perhaps they are meant to be listed by volume rather than by issue, but it may also be that the main editors also did all the copyediting for some issues, which may explain why the copyediting quality is so variable over the first decade). By volume 7, we see that nearly all sections have co-editors, which has been a fairly consistent practice over the years since then, which both distributes labor and also serves to support stability in the volunteer editorial staff collective.
